Top Grade artist: A top grade Indian instrumental musician at Akashwani Delhi & Doordarshan, Pandit Nishindra Kinjalk is a sitar maestro of Maihar Senia gharana. His style of composing music and presenting a raga, is conforming to the traditional style; yet adds subtle touches of finer phrases from the Madhubani baaj, and from his own innovations. The folk tunes of the Eastern Indian Gangetic plains, popularly known as Dadra, Kajri, Hori and Dhun are the forte of his music making.
Early training: He had his initial training in music begun by his mother Vidushi Prema Kinjalk, when he was 5 years old. Two years later, his father Pandit Ravindra Kinjalk, who was a noted sitar artist and a music composer, introduced Nishindra to the strict discipline of training and practice of Indian music. While pursuing MBBS course at the premier institute Armed Forces Medical College Pune, Nishindra started giving solo sitar recitals at Akashwani Pune in 1983.
Advanced training:
Pandit Gopal Krishna.
•Vichitra veena maestro from Maihar Senia gharana, Rampur baaj. Recipient of Sangeet Natak Academy award. One of the few seniormost disciples of sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar. Pandit Gopal Krishna was a part of the National Orcchestra at Akashwani Delhi, under the direction of Pandit Ravi Shankar.
•1986. While doing internship at St Stephen Hospital Delhi, Dr Nishindra was also giving solo sitar recitals at Akashwani Delhi & Delhi Doordarshan. He met his mentor Pandit Gopal Krishna at Akashwani Delhi.
•Under strict Guru Shishya Parampara, Pt Gopal Krishna groomed music of Nishindra and taught him about the intricacies of veenakari. This added varieties of rhythm and jhala to the music making of Nishindra. Here, he learnt to make compositions for vadya vrinda (Indian instrumental music orchestra).
Pandit Uma Shankar Mishra
• Sitar maestro from Maihar Senia Gharana, Madhubani baaj. Recipient of Sangeet Natak Academy Award. One of the few seniormost disciples of sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar. He was a part of the National Orcchestra at Akashwani Delhi, under the direction of Pandit Ravi Shankar.
• 1980. Nishindra had started as a disciple of Pandit Uma Shankar Mishra in Delhi. But he could not continue with the sitar training as he had to join AFMC Pune as a student of MBBS.
• 1993. Nishindra was a B-High grade sitar artist at Akashwani Delhi. After completeting MD in medicine, he was training as a fellow in Non-invasive Cardiology at Escorts Heart Institute, New Delhi. He met his guru Pandit Uma Shankar Mishra again. And a new journey of music learning and music making started once again. This bond continued under Guru Shishya Parampara. The melodies of phrases, the subtleness of strokes, the serious rendition of mandra alaap ( lower octave innovations) and the soulful folk tunes, all kept coming to him.
• 1995. While working as a Junior Consultant in Medicine at Holy Family Hospital New Delhi, Nishindra got the coveted A grade accreditation in Sitar at Akashwani Delhi.
• 1996. Selected by ICCR ( Indian Council for Cultural Relations), to promote Indian music in European countries. The selection panel was headed by sitar maestro Padma Bhushan Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan.
• 2018. Awarded Top grade and the decoration of Pandit by Akashwani.
